America Is All In Chair Gina McCarthy Slams Trump Administration’s Withdrawal from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as “Shortsighted” and “Foolish”

January 7, 2026 – Today, the Trump administration announced it would withdraw the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a Senate-ratified international treaty that provides the framework under which all countries respond to the threat of climate change and agree to measures that limit harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

In response to this announcement, America Is All In Chair Gina McCarthy, the first White House National Climate Advisor and 13th U.S. EPA Administrator, issued the following statement:

“This is a shortsighted, embarrassing, and foolish decision. As the only country in the world not a part of the UNFCCC  treaty, the Trump administration is throwing away decades of U.S. climate change leadership and global collaboration. This Administration is forfeiting our country's ability to influence trillions of dollars in investments, policies, and decisions that would have advanced our economy and protected us from costly disasters wreaking havoc on our country.

“America Is All In is committed to collaborating with our international partners to lower energy costs, cut pollution, and deliver on the goals of the Paris Agreement.  We will expand our efforts to work at the local level to build hope and opportunity, invest in our future, and do what's right for our kids and grandkids. We will not allow this administration to stop Americans from the huge health, safety, and economic benefits clean energy provides.”

State and local governments remain steadfast in their commitment to international climate goals. Last January, when the U.S. withdrew from the Paris Agreement, the U.S. Climate Alliance sent a letter to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell reaffirming the commitment of two dozen states to the goals of the Paris Agreement and cutting emissions. In September, during the UN General Assembly, Gina McCarthy met with Executive Secretary Stiell to reaffirm America Is All In’s commitment to international climate action. In November at COP30, U.S. Climate Alliance Co-chair Governor Tony Evers and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham met with Stiell to highlight the strength of state and regional climate leadership in the U.S. and globally, and to discuss strategies subnational governments can help achieve global climate goals.
