“Impossible to Ignore”: City and State Leaders Condemn EPA’s Failure to Protect American Public Health

February 12, 2026 — Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officially rescinded the Endangerment Finding, which in 2009 established that greenhouse gas pollution from motor vehicles poses a threat to human health. Leaders across the country have condemned the move for ignoring the overwhelming scientific evidence and the lived reality of communities facing more frequent and intense extreme weather, severe health risks, and increased economic costs.

America Is All In Chair Gina McCarthy, 13th U.S. EPA Administrator and former White House National Climate Advisor, issued the following statement:

“This EPA would rather spend its time in court working for the fossil fuel industry than protecting us from pollution and the escalating impacts of climate change.”

“For more than 15 years, EPA has had a clear scientific and legal obligation to regulate greenhouse gases, and the evidence has only grown stronger as their health and environmental hazards have become impossible to ignore.”

“State, city, community, university, and business leaders across the country will not let this Administration's dangerous decisions stop them from following the science, driving down pollution, and protecting public health.”

Co-chairs of the U.S. Climate Alliance, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said:

“This action is unlawful, ignores basic science, and denies reality. We know greenhouse gases cause climate change and endanger our communities and our health — and we will not stop fighting to protect the American people from pollution.”

Climate Mayors Executive Director Kate Wright said:

“Today’s decision by the Trump administration to weaken the EPA puts the American people at risk. As then Climate Mayors Chair Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Vice Chair Boise Mayor Lauren McLean, and Vice Chair and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, stated in July, 2025, this rollback is a failure of the government’s duty to protect our people.

“As the leaders closest to their communities, mayors have seen firsthand the havoc climate change can wreak in their cities, in the form of extreme heat, floods, damages to infrastructure and agriculture, and increased medical costs brought on by inhaling polluted air. More than 50 U.S. cities made clear in their public submissions on this ruling that rescinding these crucial, science-based standards would endanger public health and ignore the lived realities of cities across the country. At a time when families continue to see the burden of climate inaction on their daily expenses, this ruling endangers Americans and moves us further away from the leadership that is needed. While our federal government continues to fail in its basic responsibilities, cities will not stop protecting the health and safety of their residents.”
